Australia’s Rooftop Solar Market Drops 32% in January

Australia’s Rooftop Solar Market Drops 32% in January

February 26, 2026

Australia’s rooftop solar market recorded a 32% month-on-month decline in installations in January, following four consecutive months of growth, according to market analyst SunWiz.

The drop was reflected in a 32% fall in Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), a trend SunWiz says is consistent with normal seasonal patterns and does not indicate a structural shift for 2026.

In December 2025, Australia added 224 MW of new rooftop solar capacity, in line with recent historical averages. However, SunWiz cautioned that December’s performance should not be extrapolated to predict full-year trends.

System sizes also declined, reversing four months of growth. The average system size fell from over 11.5 kW in December to 10.83 kW in January, indicating a sharper contraction in larger installations. The 50–70 kW segment saw the steepest drop at 57%, while small residential systems declined by 24%.

All states and territories recorded month-on-month declines, with Victoria showing the smallest decrease (19%) and the Northern Territory the largest (69%), although average system sizes there remained relatively high.

SunWiz noted that mid-scale systems were the most affected, particularly in the 10–15 kW and 8–10 kW ranges, while the top three size categories by volume remained broadly stable month-on-month.
