Peru connected approximately 454 MW of new utility-scale solar capacity in 2025, bringing the country’s cumulative installed solar capacity to around 952 MW, according to the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM).

MINEM reported that Peru commissioned more than 700 MW of new power generation capacity in 2025, spanning solar, hydropower and thermal generation. Solar accounted for the largest share of new additions during the year.
Two large-scale solar power plants entered operation and were connected to the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN), adding a combined 456.4 MW of capacity with a total investment of $306 million. These projects include the 252.4 MW San Martín solar plant in La Joya, Arequipa, which began operations in June, and Phase I of the 204 MW Sunny solar project, which was grid-connected in October. Phase II of the Sunny project is expected to be completed in 2026, increasing its total capacity to 325 MW.
Hydropower additions totaled 231 MW across three projects, with total investments of approximately $515 million. MINEM highlighted the 209.3 MW San Gabán III hydropower plant in Puno’s Carabaya province, which began operations in May. Additional capacity came from the 20 MW Anashironi plant in Junín (commissioned in July) and the 2.2 MW Tupurí plant in Carabaya (commissioned in February).
Thermal power additions were limited to the 29.8 MW Agrolmos plant, which entered operation in August in the Olmos district of Lambayeque, with an investment of $6.2 million.
MINEM noted that following the commissioning of the San Martín project, Peru’s cumulative solar capacity reached 748 MW in July. With the addition of the Sunny solar project, total national installed solar capacity has now increased to approximately 952 MW. These figures exclude distributed generation and off-grid solar systems, which remain limited in Peru.
Earlier in April, MINEM stated that developers plan to build 14 additional solar projects totaling around 2.5 GW by 2028, all of which are expected to connect to the SEIN. If these projects proceed as planned, Peru’s total solar capacity could reach at least 2.98 GW by 2028.
