Italy Installs 2.33 GW of New Solar Capacity in H1 2025

August 05, 2025

Italy added approximately 1,092 MW of new solar capacity in Q2 2025, driven largely by continued demand for rooftop PV systems.

According to the latest data from Anie Rinnovabili, based on figures from grid operator Terna, Italy installed around 2.33 GW of new photovoltaic systems in the first half of 2025.

In comparison, H1 2024 saw roughly 3.34 GW of new solar additions.

Total PV installations for 2024 reached 6.8 GW, up from 5.23 GW in 2023, 2.48 GW in 2022, and just 0.94 GW in 2021 — reflecting steady year-on-year growth.

Breaking down the Q2 2025 additions:

  • Around 329 MW came from residential systems with capacities up to 20 kW;

  • 342 MW from commercial and industrial systems between 20 kW and 1 MW;

  • 266 MW from ground-mounted systems ranging from 1 MW to 10 MW;

  • 155 MW from large-scale PV plants exceeding 10 MW.

Anie Rinnovabili noted that, compared to both Q1 2025 and the same period in 2024, most market segments experienced a decline, with the exception of 1–10 MW systems, which saw modest growth. “This trend highlights that sub-10 MW utility-scale projects are generally easier to permit than larger ones,” the association stated. “However, the residential and C&I segments continue to show signs of contraction.”

By the end of June 2025, Italy’s cumulative installed solar capacity stood at 39.59 GW
